Social Media and How It Changed Elections

Over the years, we have seen social media play a huge part in how campaigns are won. When I first started working in digital in 2014, the majority of resources went to mail. As campaigns started seeing the ability of social platforms and the eyes that were seeing them, more resources were diverted to the different platforms. From Facebook to Instagram to the Google Suite, there is so much you can do to make social media an integral part of your campaign, but more importantly, win your election.

We’ve seen first hand, the profound impact of social media’s role in modern politics. It’s truly transforming the way politicians engage with voters. One of the significant benefits of social media is increased voter engagement. By utilizing the various social media platforms, politicians can interact with voters directly without any intermediaries. This interaction allows them to share their views, post videos, and respond to comments directly from their followers; making it easier to create a connection with their voters, which has led to higher voter engagement.

Moreover, these platforms have robust advertising tools that allow campaigns to target messages to specific audiences, enabling them to reach the right audience with the right message. Social media allows candidates to receive direct feedback from voters - in real-time, helping them adjust their messaging and positions based on what resonates with their followers. This feedback mechanism also enables them to respond to criticism or rumors quickly, which can be critical in the game of politics.

Another benefit of social media is its ability to create viral content that can quickly spread and generate buzz. This viral marketing can lead to increased visibility and help mobilize supporters. Social media's influence on traditional media cannot be underestimated, as it has become a critical source of news and information for many people.

In the end, it is essential to have a strong strategic plan with your social media BEFORE you begin your campaign. The right social strategy coupled with the right content will change EVERYTHING.
